Pilates Resistance Training
The Pilates Method was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1920's.
His techniques were originally designed to facilitate movement for bed
ridden patients. The method has evolved through the years to augment the
training of professional athletes and dancers, whose work requires both
strength and flexibility, without creating a bulk-like appearance. The
Pilates concepts have since been utilized by rehabilitation specialists,
sports medicine centers, hospitals, and universities world wide.
This
conditioning method is currently recognized as one of the most viable
forms of fitness training and is used by such notable personalities
as
Jodi Foster, Uma Thurman, Julia Roberts, and teams such as the Cincinnati
Reds and Bengals. Pilates based training will vary from one studio to
the next depending on the trainer's background. The Beau Corps Studio
trainers must have a bachelor's degree in dance, physical education,
or
medicine, and have professional experience in dance. Trainers are supervised
by the studio director, Victoria Leonard, to ensure a consistent quality
of instruction.
GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM ®
Gyrotonic Expansion System exercises work major muscle groups
interdependently and in an integrated manner. Created by former
ballet dancer Juliu Horvath, the body moves three-dimensionally in circular
and arching movement patterns designed specifically for multiple joint
articulations without compression.
The expansion throughout the
joints allow for greater movement range with comfort and ease. The
equipment is designed to strengthen the body through more kinesthetically
sound neuromuscular patterns. The
weight and pully system allows for speed and repetition with beautiful
alignment and extension unheard of with traditional resistance equipment. The
cardiovascular system strengthens as well.
Based on yoga, martial arts, gymnastics, swimming, and ballet,
Gyrotonic® training can be used to increase strength and flexibility,
to rehabilitate injuries, and to prevent further injuries by teaching
the body to move
in more efficient patterns without compression. Each movement
can be facilitated by breathing that deepens the awareness of
how the body is opened or closed. Rigid armoring of the body in
response to daily stresses can be disolved and replaced by strength
and clarity
of the mind. Gyrotonic® training is also fun, and many students
find it a valuable compliment to their body conditioning regimen.
